Botulinum toxin
Bruising - may occur following injections especially around the eyes. Application of ice at the time of injection and either arnica or vitamin K cream may help alleviate the unsightliness of a bruise, which will usually last for around a week.
Asymmetry - this is usually evident on the forehead which is a large expanse to treat. Any differences between the two sides of the forehead can readily be corrected by means of a small top-up. In many instances this will not incur any charge.
Residual movement - sometimes a little movement remains in a treated muscle group eg a small degree of frowning may still be possible. This may be ideal for some people, acceptable to others and upsetting for a few. In such instances a small additional dose can resolve this situation.
Droops - two types of droop may occur. The brow droop is not uncommon and occurs following treatment to the forehead (horizontal) lines. The latter are caused by muscles that elevate the brow and hence such elevators need to be temporarily weakened in order to address these lines. In so doing the brow may flatten by a few millimetres. This can be upsetting for some people but in fact when the flattening spontaneously resolves (usually within a week or two) the end result is a very smooth forehead.
The other type of droop is the eyelid droop which arises very rarely following treatment to the frown complex (which causes the vertical lines between the brow). Whilst this is very uncommon indeed it is nonetheless upsetting for people who experience it. The affected eyelid may droop downwards by a few millimeters leaving it looking slightly closed. This always resolves spontaneously over a few weeks and causes no residual problems. Eye drops are available which may help to elevate the eyelid.
Dermal Fillers
By and large the implanting of dermal fillers is extremely safe indeed and carries no unpleasant adverse effects.
Bruising - may always occur following any injection into the skin but is all the more likely to be noticeable following dermal filler treatment if a person takes aspirin, anti-inflammatory tablets or anti-coagulant therapy. Rarely, some people are prone to bruising as a result of a clotting disorder. Any bruise can often be improved as discussed above under Botox.
Lumpiness - following dermal fillers is easily resolved by means of firm massage. This is usually carried out at the time of implant but any residual lumps can often be addressed in a similar manner. Usually I prefer to carry this out myself. Very rarely a small lump may respond to injection of a chemical that can dissolve small amounts of the filler. This should always be carried out by myself.
Unevenness - uncommonly areas of unevenness may be noticed which are very easily resolved by means of injection of small additional amounts of the filler.
Blueness - some gel fillers if injected too superficially can produce a blue hue. This is a rare event and if it does occur is not of concern to the patient. Resolution usually occurs over a few weeks/months. If however it is causing concern then there are treatment options available so please contact me.
Sclerotherapy
Brown staining following sclerotherapy is common and almost always fades fully over a few weeks or months.
Very rarely a small scar may appear near a site of injection
It is good idea to take exercise following treatment but try and avoid a hot bath for 24 hours after a treatment session.
